Wouldn't it be mortally consistent for an anarchist to vote in a manner that would lead to less oppression. For instance, voting for the legalization of cannabis, or against a proposed act of gun control?

moralanarchism:

It is still immoral.

When you vote you are legitimizing the process.  By voting yes or no you are still admitting to the fact that the question should be asked in the first place.  The question on whether we can smoke pot, own guns, marry who the fuck we want, or any of the myriad of issues shouldn’t be up to anyone but the individuals involved.

I used to think voting was a defensive act.  I argued with Wendy McElroy about it and she was the one who convinced me I was wrong.  Casting a ballot doesn’t make one single difference.

Votes didn’t make pot legal in Colorado, didn’t make gay marriage legal in a bunch of states, and has never granted any other freedom ever in the history of society contrary to the popular believe the statists like to think.  What changes is the state of mind of the masses.  That’s what is the most important thing.  Education.

To quote Wendy.

Your vote is not a defensive act. It is an act that facilitates violence committed against people like me who have done you no harm but merely wish to live…and peacefully so. By casting a vote, you tell thugs, opportunists, parasites and worse that they have a right to intrude upon my life with their laws, their taxes and zero-tolerance policies about everything from speech to drugs, from guns to trans-fat. You vote is like ringing a dinner bell for wolves to descend.

Ah, no, you protest! Your vote is against the thugs and thuggery. You wish to usher in decent human beings who are fit to rule us all. Benign and wise power elites who would never, ever abuse their vast power and access to wealth. Reality check:

1) decent human beings do not seek to occupy a position of unjust power over others…and that is inherently what a political office is. The litmus test for decency is whether the person says “no” and walks away.
2) I don’t care how good your motives are for facilitating the violation of my rights. This merely makes you less distinguishable from others who wrap themselves in a morality backed up by force.

You must forgive me if I do not forgive your good intentions. Without your sanction, the State could not exist.

So you're pro firearms, but don't feel registration is necessary due to the fact that the government knows where the guns are? Makes sense. Good for you . I hadn't thought about it that way. I am a registered firearm owner , and now I'm a bit more cautious..

moralanarchism:

I’m neither pro or anti firearms.  That’s a personal choice that each and every individual has to make for themselves.

I’m pro individual rights.

Being for one individual right and against another individual right makes someone a hypocrite.  To restrict someone who isn’t harming anyone else you must initiate force against them.  Force should only be used in self defense, never initiated.
